Felix Alvarado enjoyed a quick night’s work against a late replacement opponent.

The reigning IBF junior flyweight titlist made the most of a less desirable scenario, making quick work of Israel Vazquez in scoring a first-round knockout. Alvarado floored Vazquez late in the frame, with the stoppage coming immediately thereafter at 2:15 of round one Saturday evening live on DAZN from the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

Puerto Rico’s Vazquez accepted the fight on short notice, in place of Erick Lopez who was unable to go through with his scheduled title challenge of Alvarado. Due to Vazquez not being ranked by the IBF, Alvarado was forced to proceed in a non-title fight, though it didn’t alter his performance.

The all-action Alvarado took the fight to Vazquez, who—to his credit—came to fight. The punches were free swinging in both directions, with Alvarado landing the more telling shots but Vazquez managing right hands in return.

Alvarado put an end to the bout in the final minute. Vazquez overcommitted on a shot up top, as Alvarado responded with a right hand to the upper body. Vazquez immediately hit the deck, with referee Luis Pabon immediately halting the contest.

Vazquez falls to 10-5-2 (7KOs), though his bravery well noted and who will likely wind up on a future telecast. Alvarado improves to 37-2 (32KOs), extending his current 19-fight win streak with all but two ending inside the distance.

Alvarado has reigned as IBF junior flyweight titlist since October 2018. His second title defense came this past January, annihilating former strawweight titlist DeeJay Kriel inside of ten rounds at American Airlines Center in nearby Dallas. The fight came on the same show as his twin brother Rene Alvarado, who suffered a twelve-round loss to Roger Gutierrez to lose his secondary WBA junior lightweight title.

The twins once again share a card, with Rene Alvarado set to face Gutierrez a third time as the evening’s chief support.

Alvarado-Vazquez served in supporting capacity as part of the four-fight main card, headlined by local favorite and rising welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (17-0, 17KOs) versus Lithuania’s two-time Olympian and former title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas (22-1-1, 18KOs).
