Karol Itauma has been getting much less publicity than his brother Moses of late, but the Youth Olympic gold medal-winner from 2018 suffered a huge upset loss as he was knocked out in the fifth round by Argentina’s Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna on the Beterbiev-Yarde undercard at Wembley.

The show was supposed to be a big family occasion, with 18-year-old heavyweight Moses making his debut. But the older Itauma, 22, who was attempting to win his first professional title in his tenth fight (the vacant WBC international light-heavyweight belt), paid the price for being too open to Maderna’s right.

Itauma went forward from the opening bell, putting pressure on Maderna and forcing the Argentinian backwards. For the first three rounds he gave Maderna a solid going over, landing sharp left behind a southpaw jab. But Maderna fired back in the fourth, landing a good right that rocked Itauma and forced him to hold on.

The danger seemed to pass, but early in the fifth round Maderna landed another right and it was clear that things were not OK with Itauma. Another right landed and then a big shot that dropped him on his back.

Itauma scrambled around for a few seconds but got back to a knee, where he still was when referee John Latham completed his count at 1:04.

For Maderna, it was the best win of his career at the age of 36. He had lost the previous eight times he had boxed outside Argentina and his record now stands at 29-10.
