A fallen unified titlist is given a chance to immediately reclaim her lost crown.

BoxingScene.com has confirmed that Evelin Bermudez and Tania Enriquez are set to fight on March 10 at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which will be presented by OR Promotions. The vacant IBF and WBO junior flyweight titles will be at stake for the terrific matchup between the former unified titlist and rising unbeaten contender.

Bermudez (17-1-1, 6KOs) previously held both titles, having won the IBF junior flyweight belt in a December 2018 split decision victory over Maria Bautista. Six successful defenses followed, including a fifth-round knockout of Debora Renfigo last March 26 to add the vacant WBO title to her collection. One successful unified title defense followed before the 26-year-old from Santa Fe, Argentina dropped a ten-round, majority decision to Yokasta Valle, who became a three-division titlist with the win last November 26 in Carson, California.

Costa Rica’s Valle (27-2, 9KOs) was then given ten days to decide whether to remain at junior flyweight or return to the strawweight division where she also holds the IBF/WBO titles. Valle chose the latter, leaving the IBF and WBO 108-pound belts available for Bermudez to reclaim.

It is far from a foregone conclusion, as she still has to fight for the belts versus stiff competition.

Tijuana’s Enriquez (20-0, 9KOs) emerged as the top-rated contender as she prepares for her first title challenge. She will travel to the lion’s den in what also marks her first career fight outside of Mexico.

The 25-year-southpaw has been brought up the traditional route from newcomer to prospect to contender, somewhat of a lost art in an era where women are rushed to title shots early in their career. In her most recent start, Enriquez claimed an eight-round decision win last December 3 in Rosarito, Mexico.

News of the fight comes as the division’s other two major titles were unified in a leading 2023 Fight of the Year contender.

Mexico City’s Jessica Nery Plata (29-2, 3KOs) traveled to Canada with her WBA junior flyweight title and came home with the WBC belt also in her possession. The honor came in a well-earned, unanimous decision win over Montreal’s previously unbeaten WBC titlist Kim Clavel this past Friday in Laval, Canada.

Promoter Yvon Michel openly discussed the possibility of a rematch which could take place as early as April. The timing would leave room for the unified titlists to possibly meet later this year to crown the first-ever undisputed junior flyweight queen.
