In a stunner, WBO #14 ranked welterweight Sherali “The Lion” Mamadaliev (11-1, 7 KOs) was stopped in eleven rounds by unheralded Russian journeyman Alexey Yevchenko (9-7-1, 5 KOs) an hour ago at restaurant “Orizzonte”, in Jurmala, Latvia. The entire fight turned to be a never-ending nightmare for the Tajik prospect, who put his WBO European and PABA titles at risk against upset-minded EBU-EE titleholder.

Mamadaliev was down in the first, in the second (which wasn’t reportedly ruled as a legitimate knockdown) and in the eleventh round and he was also deducted two points for hitting after the break. Time was 1:16 of the penultimate round, when referee Nikolay Talalakin put an end to this contest. Scores at the time of stoppage were 90-99, 91-98 and 91-96 – all in favour of Yevchenko, who got his second upset in a row following a road KO 9 last October over Bogdan Mitic.

Highly touted Russian junior welterweight prospect Denis Shafikov (24-0, 14 KOs) got a sterner test than one he had probably expected but finally stopped Mexican journeyman Leonardo Resendiz (23-25, 15 KOs) in six rounds. Resendiz retired in his corner moments before a bell starting round seven of scheduled eight.

In a mild upset BBU international super middleweight champion Anton Sjomkin (4-2, 3 KOs) of Estonia was dethroned by Latvian journeyman Ruslans Pojonisevs (11-9-1, 8 KOs) after the sixth-round unanimous decision.
