A son of one of the most fan-friendly fighters of his era entertained the crowd accordingly Saturday night.

Emiliano Vargas, the youngest of Fernando Vargas’ three sons, viciously knocked out Julio Martinez in the second round of their scheduled four-round lightweight fight in Las Vegas. Vargas, a talented 18-year-old prospect, landed a left hook to the body before he came back up top with a flush left hook that knocked Martinez flat on his back, beneath the bottom rope.

Referee Allen Huggins immediately waved an end to their fight on the Janibek Alimkhanuly-Denzel Bentley undercard at Palms Casino Resort’s Pearl Concert Theater. The official time of the stoppage was 47 seconds into the second round.

Las Vegas Vargas (2-0, 2 KOs), who is trained by his famous father, made his debut with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., which signed him last month to an exclusive promotional contract. The 19-year-old Martinez (1-1, 1 KO), of South Bend, Indiana, landed a stiff jab just before Vargas responded with the aforementioned body-head combination that abruptly brought their fight to an end.

Vargas, who went 110-10 as an amateur, made his pro debut May 14 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. He knocked out Mark Salgado (1-2, 1 KO), of San Jose, California, in the first round on the same card on which his older brothers – Fernando Jr. (6-0, 6 KOs), a 26-year-old junior middleweight, and Amado (4-0, 2 KOs), a 22-year-old junior lightweight – also produced victories.
