According to several reports, super featherweight Edy Valencia Mercado is in a critical condition following his loss on Saturday night against George Acosta.

The fight was the co-featured attraction on the final event for Thompson Boxing, which took place at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario, California.

Valencia, 32-years-old, was down in the fourth round. The fight was stopped before the sixth by the ringside physician, when Mercado appeared to tell his corner that he wasn't able to see.

Valencia entered the ring with a 20-11-6 record and had never been stopped in his career. Acosta, with only 3 stoppage wins in 17 fights, is not viewed as a dangerous puncher. Despite the numerical stats, there is always danger involved in every contest.

After the fight, Valencia was taken to a local hospital. There are unconfirmed reports that he suffered a brain injury.

Thompson Boxing issued a statement to advise the public of Valencia's condition.

“Thompson Boxing Promotions is deeply saddened to inform that boxer Edy Valencia is currently fighting for his life at a hospital in Ontario, Canada, following his bout with George Acosta," the statement read.

“At this moment, we kindly ask the boxing community, fans, and everyone touched by Edy’s journey to join us in offering prayers and positive energy for his swift and full recovery. We believe in the power of collective support and strength, and together, we hope to see Edy Valencia pull through this trying ordeal.”

Veteran promoter Lou Dibella had recently used Valencia on one of his events.

"Terrible news. Edy fought recently on a show I promoted and he’s a very nice young man. Prayers please for Edy Valencia and his family. May God hold them in his hands," DiBella stated.
