Edgar Berlanga has parted ways with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., which has promoted the undefeated super middleweight for much of his career.

BoxingScene.com confirmed that Berlanga’s manager, Keith Connolly, and representatives for Top Rank reached a separation agreement Wednesday morning following several months of talks about how to proceed with Berlanga’s career this year. Brooklyn’s Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs) has not fought since June 11, in large part because the New York State Athletic Commission suspended Berlanga for six months and fined him $10,000 because he attempted to bite Colombian contender Alexis Angulo on his left shoulder during the seventh round of a 10-round bout Berlanga won by unanimous decision that night at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York.

Connolly manages fighters who are affiliated with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. No determination had been made as of Wednesday afternoon, however, related to Berlanga’s promotional future.

ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger first reported Wednesday that Berlanga became a promotional free agent.

Berlanga, 25, built momentum as a prospect by winning all of his first 16 professional fights by knockout or technical knockout, several of which were broadcast by ESPN. Each of his past four fights have gone the distance, however, including 10-round unanimous points wins in 2022 against Toronto’s Steve Rolls (22-2, 12 KOs) and Angulo (27-3, 23 KOs).

Berlanga is popular on social media and has developed a fan base, particularly in New York, yet he also has drawn some criticism for his performances since his knockout streak ended in April 2021. He is ranked fourth among super middleweight contenders by the IBF, WBA and WBO, and 12th by the WBC.

He underwent surgery to repair a torn left biceps before he defeated Rolls. Berlanga suffered that injury in the third round of his previous fight, a 10-round, unanimous-decision defeat of Argentina’s Marcelo Coceres in October 2021 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Coceres (31-5-1, 17 KOs) dropped Berlanga in the ninth round of that bout, but Berlanga won by the same score, 96-93, on all three cards.
