Delante 'Tiger' Johnson shook off an early scare to prevail in his deepest fight to date.

The 2020 Olympic quarterfinalist went the eight-round distance in a lopsided unanimous decision victory over battle-tested Alfonso Olvera. Judges Henry Ellick (80-72), Joe Mason (80-72) and David Sutherland (80-72) scored every round for Johnson, who’d never fought beyond the sixth round prior to their ESPN+ aired junior welterweight contest Saturday evening from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Cleveland’s Johnson used his jab early to set up his offensive attack. The unbeaten Cleveland native went to the body and found success with his left hook downstairs. It did not at all faze Olvera, who briefly rocked Johnson with an overhand right midway through the opening round.

It was relatively smooth sailing for Johnson through the balance of the contest. A quarterfinalist for the U.S. during the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Johnson doubled up on his left hook to start round two and was steady with jabs and overhand rights in each passing round. The disciplined approach impacted Tucson’s Olvera, whose offense grew increasingly sloppy versus the unbeaten American.

The lone hindrance in Johnson’s latest win was a complaint of shoulder pain midway through the bout. Ironically, the revelation was caught on air prior to a dominant round six that saw Johnson crack Olvera with a straight right hand. Olvera dipped at the knees but managed to avoid touching the canvas, though at the cost of taking another right hand on the chin.

Johnson entered uncharted territory once the bell sounded to begin round seven. It was in stark contrast to the 33-year-old Olvera, who by night’s end went eight rounds or more for the eighth time in his career. He is now just 1-7 in those fights, including a January 2017 points loss to Scotland’s Josh Taylor (19-0, 13KOs) who went on to become undisputed junior welterweight champion.

The final two rounds saw Johnson stick to fundamentals, which were enough to keep Olvera (12-8-3, 4KOs) at bay and preserve his unbeaten mark. The 24-year-old Johnson is now 8-0 (5KOs) through just 17 months as a pro.

Headlining the show, Robeisy Ramirez (11-1, 7KOs) and Isaac Dogboe (24-2, 15KOs) meet in a scheduled 12-round vacant WBO featherweight title fight.
