Oscar De La Hoya publicly issued an ultimatum early Sunday morning.

Ryan Garcia’s promoter stated through his Twitter account that he has not yet received Garcia’s contract for his pay-per-view showdown with Gervonta Davis. According to De La Hoya, if they don’t get a contract from Davis’ handlers by Monday, he will begin looking for another opponent for Garcia’s next fight.

“I have no contract,” De La Hoya wrote. “Deadline for me is Monday or I’m moving on.”

The founder of Golden Boy Promotions attached the hashtag “#DavisGarcia” to the statements he Tweeted. De La Hoya’s message might merely be a negotiating tactic, but there’s clearly concern on Garcia’s side that he hasn’t received a contract for what would be the biggest fight of his career.

Davis versus Garcia is one of the most profitable, marketable bouts that can be made in boxing. Baltimore’s Davis and Garcia, of Victorville, California, announced through their social media accounts November 17 that they had agreed to fight next, sometime in 2023 in Las Vegas.

They couldn’t move forward with their high-profile fight unless Davis defeated Hector Luis Garcia in their 12-round, 135-pound title fight January 7 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Davis stopped the previously undefeated Dominican southpaw when Garcia (16-1, 10 KOs, 3 NC) declined to leave his corner for the start of the ninth round.

The 28-year-old Davis indicated afterward, however, that there was still work to do before they could officially announce a date and a site for his fight with Ryan Garcia.

“If it’s up to me, Ryan’s definitely next,” Davis said. “We somewhat got everything, you know what I mean, going in the right direction. So, we just waiting for Ryan to accept on his side, and let’s get the job done.”

De La Hoya didn’t mention any potential problems that would prevent the 24-year-old Garcia from signing a contract. The International Boxing Hall of Famer only noted that he has not yet received a contract for what is expected to be a Showtime Pay-Per-View main event.

Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) and Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) have both acknowledged that they have agreed to box in a non-title fight, at a catch weight of 136 pounds, one above the lightweight limit. April 15 has repeatedly been mentioned as the target date for Davis-Garcia, but Davis’ trial next month in his hometown could affect when their fight happens.

Starting February 16, Davis will face 14 misdemeanor motor vehicle violations that stem from a hit-and-run accident two years ago. Davis allegedly drove his Lamborghini through a red light at an intersection in Baltimore and collided with a Toyota Solara in November 2020.

The driver of the Toyota and three passengers suffered injuries from which they have recovered. Davis left the scene of that accident before authorities arrived.

If Davis is sentenced to jail time, it would temporarily prevent him from training for his bout with Garcia.
