Golden Boy Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya expects a big drama show should Jaime Munguia and Gennadiy Golovkin ever meet in a fight.

In the meantime, Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) is next set to face former world title challenger Maciej Sulecki (29-2, 11KOs) in a middleweight match targeted for April 24, BoxingScene.com’s Jake Donovan reported Monday.

Before the Munguia bout was formalized against his Polish foe, a more desired match against the Kazakh KO artist was contemplated.

“I believe [Munguia-Golovkin] is the fight to make, and that’s a fight that fight fans would really, really enjoy,” De La Hoya told Fino Boxing. “Just the fact that Canelo doesn’t want to fight GGG anymore, I think [Canelo] passed that. Why not fight another Mexican in Jaime Munguia, which would be a barnburner.

“Jaime Munguia comes forward, he fights, and it would be a great fight, a great matchup. We know that Golovkin doesn’t shy away from any matchup. So that’s one fight I can hopefully make down the road.”

Munguia and Golovkin were supposed to fight on May 5, 2018 but the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not approve the still-green Munguia as a strong enough replacement opponent after the GGG-Canelo Alvarez sequel was originally scrapped.

Instead, Munguia fought an undersized Sadam Ali a week later and captured his first world title at the age of 21 as a super welterweight.

“Now I feel Jaime Munguia is more than ready for Golovkin,” said De La Hoya. “I say Jaime Munguia knocks him out. Straight-out knockout just because of the styles. Just because of Golovkin’s last performance [against Kamil Szeremeta in December]. He looked slow; he looked beatable. And he had nobody in front of him, obviously. I feel like with Jaime Munguia’s age, his strength, and youth, obviously, he can just adapt. I’m ready; let’s do it … Jaime Munguia is a star in the making, and he’s the next big Mexican champion.”
