Luis DeCubas Sr, who promotes undefeated WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion David Morrell, is standing firm that his boxer is ready and willing to face David Benavidez next.

Jose Benavidez Sr, father and trainer of Benavidez, had stated in a recent interview that he was advised that Morrell was not ready for such a fight.

“Morrell has been saying that he wants David Benavidez and at the end of the day I would love to fight him,” Jose Sr. explained to FightHype.com. “His coach said he wasn't ready, his team said he's not ready. So I think he wants that fight, I don't think he's afraid of David, but if his team doesn't think he's ready there's nothing he can do."

Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) was in action earlier this month when he blew away Sena Agbeko in two rounds.

Both Benavidez and Morrell are promoted by Premier Boxing Champions.

However, DeCubas Sr. indicates that nobody had ever spoken with Benavidez Sr. about a potential clash between their boxers.

“I want to make it clear that Morrell's main team is headed by Leon Margules, who is my partner in Warriors Boxing, Alexis Ferrer and I,” DeCubas Sr. stated to George Ebro.

“At no time have we had any communication with Benavidez Sr. about Morrell not being ready. What's more, we double down and reaffirm what David Morrell said: we now want David Benavidez one hundred percent."

Benavidez saw action twice in 2023, with a bruising decision win over former world champion Caleb Plant. And then he followed that up last month, with battering stoppage of former two-division world champion Demetrius Andrade. Benavidez is now angling to secure a May showdown with Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - but Canelo has numerous options for his next ring outing.
