Negotiations are underway for Danny Green to take on Sonny Bill Williams in a boxing super fight in 2016.

Recently the talk has centred around Green fighting Anthony Mundine, but the All Blacks midfielder has emerged as an athlete that the Aussie would love to have a crack at.

"That, to me, is really exciting," Green told the Daily Telegraph.

Australian boxer Danny Green is keen to step into the ring with Sonny Bill Williams.

"It's a big fight. It's new, it's fresh, and Sonny Bill, man, look at the bloke. He's a giant, he's an exceptional athlete, I've got a lot of respect for the bloke."

Williams' manager Khoder Nasser is reported to be trying to put the fight together.

Nasser, who is no longer active in Mundine's camp after the brash boxer struggled to command big pay-per-view audiences for his fights, has opted for secure purses with boxing promoter Brian Amatruda.

Green, who has no connection with Amatruda, has contacted Nasser to facilitate and immediately the conversation turned to a bout with Williams.

"A lot of people have been saying it to me and I said to Khoder I'd do it, no problem," Green said.

"He said that's not the stupidest thing I've heard. So we spoke about it."

On boxing experience, Green would have a clear advantage over Williams, but the fight will be a heavyweight contest which would allow Williams to have a significant weight advantage. He tips the scales at around 107kg, while Green has been at his best at around 87kg.

There would also be a significant age gap with Green 43 and Williams 31 at the time of the fight.

"It's a bit David versus Goliath," Green said.

"People will say it's a football star coming across to the sport of boxing against a legitimate fighter. But the legitimate fighter has got the experience and he has got the size.

"He's got the strength, the athleticism, the youth, the power. And I'll be 43 and he'll be in his prime."

Williams may find it hard to fit the fight into his schedule in 2016. As well as his commitments to Super Rugby with the Chiefs and the All Blacks, Williams has signed on for Gordon Tietjens sevens side as they try to win gold at the Rio Olympics.
