The career of Danny Garcia has been littered with world title victories and exponentially large wads of cash. Though he’s always been confident, not even in Garcia’s wildest dreams did he believe things would play out the way they have.

Ultimately, winning championship gold in two separate weight classes, at least from his point of view, is enough to securely lock up a place in boxing’s Hall of Fame. However, if the 35-year-old does hear his name inducted, the accompanying smile that will be plastered across his face won’t be as wide as it could have been.

All along, the Philadelphia native has always felt that he had what it took to become a three-divisional champion. So, after looking reluctantly down at the scales and further evaluating his ambitions, Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs) opted against squeezing down his frame to the 147-pound limit.

Reinvigorated and motivated by his new journey, Garcia officially made his junior middleweight debut in July of 2022, easily outpointing an overmatched Jose Benavidez Jr. While he could opt to move up the ranks and work his way toward title contention, Garcia will be taking the elevator directly to his championship dreams.

Although he’s fought just once above the welterweight limit, Garcia will abandon his new weight class to venture off into the land of the 160s. On August 5th, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Garcia will officially take on current WBA middleweight champion, Erislandy Lara. Their impending contest will take place at a catchweight of 155 pounds.

Lara, who captured the WBA’s “Regular” title in 2021, was eventually elevated to full titleholder status once Gennadiy Golovkin refused to consolidate titles with the Cuban star.

By and large, Garcia never quite envisioned himself competing in the middleweight division. Nevertheless, with his shot at a world title just around the corner, Garcia took to social media to send his adoring fans one succinct message.

“3 division champ coming soon.”
