Daniel Dubois heads a ten-person shortlist for the Boxing Writers’ Club Young Boxer of the Year award after a stellar year that saw him win the British heavyweight title as well as beat two former world title challengers.

The 21-year-old is one of four British champions on the shortlist, which also features a female boxer for the first time in Terri Harper.

The winner will receive the Geoffrey Simpson Award at the Boxing Writers’ Club 68th annual dinner at The Savoy, London, on October 7.

The list of previous winners is a who’s who of British boxing going back to the inaugural winner, Randolph Turpin.

Dubois, 21, heavyweight, 12-0, capped an impressive season by knocking out Nathan Gorman in July at the O2 arena to claim the British title, extending his unbeaten record to 12 in the process. Another boxer who had a sensational season was Kash Farooq, who won the British bantamweight title with a 73-second stoppage of Jamie Wilson last September and made two successful title defences to win the Lonsdale Belt outright.

The other British champions nominated are Ted Cheeseman, the light-middleweight, and Brad Foster, who won the British super-bantamweight title and then added the Commonwealth title too.

Harper, 22, won five times during the season, culminating in a knockout win over Nozipho Bell in July to claim the IBO super-featherweight title.

Conor Benn is on the shortlist for the second time, having missed some of the year through injury, while Sunny Edwards, the younger brother of WBC flyweight champion, Charlie, is nominated after four wins in the years, as is the big-punching Mikael Lawal, who won the cruiserweight Ultimate Boxxer in July.

Kieron Conway, who drew with Cheeseman for the British title after taking the fight at short notice, and Archie Sharp, who marked himself out as a serious prospect by snapping the unbeaten run of Lyon Woodstock in October complete the list.
