Smithy’s Promotions are proud to present in association with Hatton Promotions Damien “Super” Hooper vs Josh “Hitman” Webb. The man who is being touted as one of Australia’s next big things in professional boxing, Damien “Super” Hooper will take another step in his career when he takes on Toowoomba’s tough Josh “Hitman” Webb on the undercard of “Smithy Brings the big fights 6” Dalby born Hooper, who fights out of the Boxing Shop in Brisbane under the eye of Gareth Williams, boasts one of Australia’s most successful amateur careers where he claimed a youth Olympic gold medal and represented Australia at the 2012 London Olympics.
Now as a professional he has continued that form winning all 6 of his professional fights by KO and claiming the WBC world youth title. However his trainer Gareth Williams feels this is only the tip of the iceberg.
“Damien is looking forward to a big 2014,” said Williams.
“After winning the WBC world youth title, he is even more determined to put more belts
in his cupboard. I’m sure he will be a world wide superstar in a couple of years”.
Damien says he is very excited to be fighting in the garden city.
“I’m very excited to be fighting in Toowoomba for the first time as a professional” said
Hooper.
“I’ve begun training already and I’m looking forward to putting on a show on the night. I
don’t know much about my opponent but I give him the respect he deserves. Fighting on
the same card as Katsidis will be an honour. He has been where I want to go”.
Hooper’s promoter Ricky Hatton of Hatton promotions believes his charge is ready to
take his place as one of Australia’s best.
“Damien is a very talented individual who has the potential to go down as one of the all
time greats of Australian boxing. We are proud to have him on board at Hatton
Promotions and thank Brendon Smith for putting him on his card. We look forward to
working with Brendon in the future,” said Ricky Hatton.
This however may be contrary to the plans of Josh Webb, who trained by Brandon Wood
of Big Hit boxing has made a name winning as the underdog. After a steady start to his
pro career, Josh has been on a roll claiming the Victorian title in his opponents back
yard, upsetting his Western Australian opponent in his back yard and more recently
scoring a controversial draw with the highly regarded Phill Maley. Hooper though
presents a new challenge.
“Josh has been working exceptionally hard for this fight. He has been stepping up
against higher rated opponents in his last 3 fights and has been able to overcome them,” said Josh’s trainer Brandon Wood.
“Damien was an outstanding amateur and is undefeated as a pro, another opponent rated higher in the rankings.
Josh’s mantra is to be considered the best you have to beat the best. Styles make fights and I think the contrasting styles of these two boxers will make for an outstanding battle.”
Promoter Brendon Smith is very excited to add this fight to the March 14 Josh Webb sporting his Victorian title belt.
“I’m very excited to be working with Hatton promotions to bring this fight to “Smithy
Brings the big fights 6”,” said Brendon Smith.
“This is a fight that Damien wants, a fight Josh wants and I would like to thank Damien,
his management and Ricky Hatton for working with me to make this fight”.
This fight will take place on the undercard of “Smithy Brings the Big Fights 6” which will
be headlined by the return of Michael Katsidis “The Great”. The card will also feature
adopted Toowoomba boy, Filipino star Jack “The Assassin” Asis as well as undefeated
and current WBC youth world champion “The Great White” Brayd Smith.
Undefeated local KO artist “The Silencer” Kris George will put his “0” on the line against
fellow undefeated boxer Ozan “Crash” Craddock for the Queensland Welterweight title.
Heavyweight Herman Ene-Purcell “The Hermanator” will take on current Queensland
heavyweight champ Kyle Brumby. Local boxers Graham Blay and Cory “The little Hit
man” Hess will also step back in to the ring along with running champion and crowd
favorite Tressa “T-rex” Lindenberg. Fellow local Sam Williams is also set to make his
professional debut.
Tickets to “Smithy Brings the Big fights 6” are on sale now from Smithy’s Gym where
prices start at $55 for general $75 for ringside B and $95 for ringside A.
