Beating an undefeated fighter for the first time as a pro is just the type of statement Charles Conwell wants to make at this point in his career.

Cleveland’s Conwell is in the process of attempting to transform himself from a prospect into a legitimate junior middleweight contender. The 2016 U.S. Olympian hopes a victory over fellow prospect Wendy Toussaint on Wednesday night at least proves his readiness to face ranked contenders within the 154-pound division.

Showtime will air Conwell-Toussaint as the main event of the latest installment of its “ShoBox: The New Generation” series from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“This is fight is gonna get me more media attention and attention from not only diehard boxing fans, but from mainstream media as well,” Conwell told BoxingScene.com. “Getting more media attention and getting my name out there, that’s gonna help build my legacy and build my net worth as a fighter, and just get me closer to those bigger names. They won’t be able to say, ‘Who is Charles Conwell?’ They’ll already know who Charles Conwell is. That’s what this fight is about for me.”

The 22-year-old Conwell (12-0, 9 KOs) won his last bout by technical knockout once Mexico’s Ramses Agaton (22-12-3, 12 KOs) declined to continue following the fourth round February 8 in Hammond, Indiana. That victory marked Conwell’s first fight after his previous opponent, Patrick Day, died from brain injuries incurred during Conwell’s 10th-round knockout win against him last October 12 in Chicago.

The 28-year-old Toussaint (12-0, 5 KOs), of Huntington, New York, clearly out-boxed Detroit’s Isiah Jones (9-3, 3 KOs) in his last fight, August 22 in Las Vegas.

“I think he did what he needed to do to get the win,” Conwell said. “I think he won the fight. I know Isiah has never been knocked out before, so he’s a tough person to get out of there.”

Conwell expects to encounter a motivated Toussaint, who is well aware he could change the course of his career by beating Conwell.

“I think Wendy Toussaint is a real fighter, man,” Conwell said. “He’s undefeated for a reason. He never felt what it’s like to lose before. I know he’s training hard. He probably thinks he’s the underdog in this fight, so that’s always extra jet fuel for any fighter. So, I think he’s coming to win and coming to look impressive and get an upset over myself.”

This “ShoBox” broadcast, which will begin at 9 p.m. ET, also will feature undefeated prospects Janelson Bocachica and Brandun Lee in separate eight-round welterweight fights.

Detroit’s Bocachica (15-0, 10 KOs) is scheduled to oppose Puerto Rico’s Nicklaus Flaz (9-1, 7 KOs). Lee (19-0, 17 KOs), of La Quinta, California, is set to face Jimmy Williams (16-3-2, 5 KOs, 1 NC), of New Haven, Connecticut.
