Light heavyweight contender Eleider Alvarez's rapier jab (26.4 thrown/8.3 connects per round, exceeded 10 connects in a round five times) and timely power connects (75 of 191, 39%) allowed him to overcome Jean Pascal's round-stealing last-minute flurries to capture a majority decision that many saw as unanimous.

Pascal failed to reach double-digit connects in a round until the eighth while Alvarez reached that threshold in all but two rounds. Pascal avd'd 30.8 punches thrown per round vs. Alvarez after averaging 32.7 in his previous 8 fights. Scoring: 114-114, 117-111, 116-112.

Bell Centre, Montreal - In a battle for the WBC light heavyweight Silver world title, Eleider Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) won a twelve round majority decision over former world champion Jean Pascal (31-5-1, 18 KOs), who had former four division champion Roy Jones Jr. working his corner. The scores were 114-114, 117-111 and 116-112 for Alvarez.

Alvarez returns from a February fight, where he knocked out former world champion Lucian Bute in five rounds. Alvarez is the mandatory challenger to the WBC world title, which is held by Adonis Stevenson.

Pascal was returning from a quick victory in December, after taking a very bad beating in a January 2016 stoppage defeat in his rematch with Sergey Kovalev.

Alvarez now hopes to get the mandatory title shot, after Stevenson retained his title in the main event of the card. The fight could very well take place in the fall.
