With Curtis Woodhouse taking some time out to decide whether or not he should carry on boxing, his promoter and friend, Dave Coldwell, hopes that the former British light-welterweight champion calls it a day.

Woodhouse 22-7 (13) lost his 140lb Lonsdale title and his challenge for the Commonwealth version last Friday night in Glasgow against home favourite Willie Limond 38-4 (10) after dropping a majority decision loss over 12 rounds. Boxing Scene asked Coldwell, at the Braehead Arena where the two fighters met, if the ex-professional football player should bow out.

“100%,” he replied. “It’s been a great ride, a fantastic journey. It’s been brilliant, it’s been emotional and there’s been ups and downs. And nobody can take away that night in Hull (when Woodhouse won the title from Darren Hamilton). He’s got nothing else to prove.

“He gave everything [against Limond]. There was nothing else to give, he gave everything and for me go out on that performance. If he carries on… to do what? Won what he’s already won before? What’s the point? He’s won it before, no-one can take it away from him that he was British champion.”

Looking back at the fight that saw Woodhouse visit the canvas twice courtesy of two textbook uppercuts from Limond, Coldwell disagreed with ‘Scene’s assessment that the 35 year old Scot had rolled back the years.

“I don’t think he rolled back the years, it was the best he boxed,” said Coldwell. “Curtis never hit him clean on the chin with his right hand. Willie took that right hand away from him. Willie used his feet really well tonight and, as you know, anyone that moves is going to give Curtis trouble. Looking at Willie, we thought Curtis would out-jab him which I think he did but I wanted him to land the body shot and he did land some which Willie felt, but didn’t land enough.

“Fighters that are experienced and have a good amateur background kind of read you as they go along. He [Woodhouse] did will to get up from the knockdowns and when we told him he was behind, and he had to go for it, he really went for it.”
