Chris Colbert didn’t need long to come correct.

The unbeaten Brooklyn native successfully made weight on his second attempt ahead of his WBA interim junior lightweight title defense versus Mongolia’s Tugstsogt Nyambayar. Colbert came in right at the 130-pound divisional limit, just minutes after officially weighing 130.2 on his first attempt during Friday’s weigh-in at Hyatt Regency in Los Angeles.

Nyambayar was under the limit, weighing 129.6 pounds for their scheduled 12-round bout, which headlines a Showtime telecast Saturday evening from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Boxing fans didn’t hesitate to point to the irony in Colbert’s brash talk throughout fight week, including the claim that Nyambayar looked fat during Thursday’s final pre-fight press conference.

Neither fighter looked anything close to out of shape, though it was Colbert who failed to make weight on his first try, actually weighing 130.6 pounds before removing his boxers in an attempt to make the divisional limit without having to do any extra work. Another 0.4 pounds were shed on the spot, leaving the 24-year-old to sweat out the last few ounces before reporting back with the California State Athletic Commission to officially make weight.

Colbert (15-0, 6KOs) will attempt the second defense of the WBA interim junior lightweight title he claimed in a 12-round win over former WBA “Super” champ Jezreel Corrales last January. He is coming off of an eleventh-round knockout of Jaime Arboleda in a sensational performance last November 28 on Showtime from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Nyambayar weighed his heaviest as a pro, as the 2012 Olympic Silver medalist normally campaigns in the featherweight division. Saturday’s opportunity was accepted by Nyambayar on two weeks’ notice, replacing Miami’s Yuriorkis Gamboa who was forced to withdraw after suffering a rib injury.

Opening the telecast, Michel Rivera (20-0, 13KOs) and Jon Fernandez (21-1, 18KOs) both made weight on the first try for their WBA lightweight title eliminator. Miami’s Rivera was a light and fit 134.4 pounds, while Spain’s Fernandez weighed right at the 135-pound divisional limit.
