Eduardo and Leonardo Baez are both matched tough for their next respective ring assignments but couldn’t have asked for a better training stablemate to help them prepare for the moment.

The pair of identical twins from Mexicali both worked with former Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (50-3, 41KOs), as all three had fights scheduled around the same general time frame. Gonzalez is coming off of a disputed 12-round split decision defeat to Juan Francisco Estrada in their thrilling rematch earlier this month, while the Baez brothers face a pair of unbeaten Puerto Rican prospects on the same show this Thursday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“They are great fighters, great warriors,” Gonzalez told a group of reporters during a recent Zoom media conference call. “They have helped me tremendously and they are both ready to go.

“They definitely inspire me. It is a great honor to train alongside these young prospects. They have a tremendous amount of energy which motivates me. It allows me to improve my own skills and training.”

Eduardo Baez (18-1-2, 6KOs) faces Cidra’s Abimael Ortiz (8-0-1, 4KOs), while Leonardo Baez (18-3, 9KOs) faces Ponce’s dangerous knockout artist Carlos Caraballo (13-0, 13KOs). Both bouts are scheduled for eight rounds and due to air live on NBC Sports Network’s Ring City USA boxing series.

Both were in camp for Nicaragua’s Gonzalez, helping simulate the fighting style of Estrada ahead of their Lineal/WBC/WBA junior bantamweight championship rematch.

“They are similar to Estrada in their power and the manner in which they throw their combinations,” noted Gonzalez of his preparation for the aforementioned sequel. “They are both in great condition.

Gonzalez doesn’t particularly represent the fighting style of either of the opponents whom the Baez brothers will face on Thursday. Rather, it is his vast wealth of boxing knowledge which makes him of value to anyone fortunate enough with whom he shares a training camp.

“I tried to teach them to learn from experience, and also what to pick up on during sparring,” noted Gonzalez. “I threw a lot of combinations to maintain that intensity that they will see in a fight.

“It’s a great opportunity for them. They are two young fighters in a position to take advantage of this opportunity. It’s a big step up for prospects and they are ready.”
