Inactive since the month of March when he defeated Bryan Vera, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1-1, 32 KOs) believes a fight with WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs) can still happen. The fight was being discussed a few months but the negotiations fell apart when Chavez was unable to reach an agreement with his current promoter, Top Rank.

According to Chavez Jr., his contract with Top Rank is about to expire, without specifying a date, but Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum claims the Mexican boxer owes his company another fight and the ongoing deal expires on October 15 of 2015.

"To make that fight everyone must come to an agreement, but [Top Rank] wanted a contract extension. I wanted to fight him, but I have to think about my future. In fact the bout with Golovkin has not fallen off, I can still fight him. The fight Golovkin could happen later this year or in early 2015. It's not that I didn't want to face him, there were contract issue. In fact I was really excited to fight with Golovkin because everyone wants to see that fight. He is a great fighter, and people are speculating who can handle him, and that has to be someone who has good chin - and that's me," Chavez Jr. said.
