Charlie Edwards is back –– and back in style.

The Epsom former world title challenger claimed a belt in something of a one-sided affair against Iain Butcher.

Edwards was named the British super-flyweight champion in his first fight up at 115lbs, live on Sky Sports, at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

The fight, which took place on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ WBA super-lightweight title defence against IBF and IBO champion Julius Indongo of Namibia, began with the title only at stake for Edwards after Butcher failed to make weight on Friday.

There was never really a question, however, of the eventual loser getting into the fight, with Edwards controlling the fight with his supreme, piston-like jab.

Butcher had limited spells of success but, in truth, was outboxed and ultimately outclassed by Edwards, who lost to Johnriel Casimero in a challenge for the IBF flyweight world title last September.

The fight went the distance and the three ringside scoring judges handed in tallies of 120-108 twice and 120-109.

“I’m over the moon,” said Edwards in the aftermath. “I’ve been learning a lot backstage and learning a lot under Adam Booth. I wanted the British title for a long, long time. Now I want to defend it and keep it.

“I boxed for the world title and it didn’t work out for me. Now it’s time to take a step back, slow down, listen to Adam and we will move from there.

“That defeat was a gutting for me. But after a brushed myself down after two weeks, I took the positives from it. I’ve learned a lot, now I’m just going to keep progressing.”
