Later on tonight in Dublin, Chantelle Cameron and Katie Taylor will meet in their rematch for the undisputed super lightweight title. Will Cameron repeat the close but clear victory she recorded in May or will lightweight queen, Taylor, add another chapter to her long and storied career by becoming an undisputed champion at two weights.

It was a fighter at the very start of his career who got the show underway at the 3Arena.

Guildford’s Giorgio Visioli (1-0, 1 KO) made an eye catching debut, stopping Lee Anthony Sibley (3-2, 1 KO) in the first round of their lightweight four rounder.

The southpaw took the center of the ring and forced Sibley onto the retreat from the opening bell. Visioli probed away with a jab, attempting to draw a lead from Sibley. Eventually he took the bait and leapt in with a wide right hand. Visioli beat him to the shot with a perfectly timed looping left hook. Sibley went down in spectacular fashion and although he got to his feet, referee Emile Tied stopped the fight after just 1.21 of the opening round.

John Cooney won his first professional title, picking up the Celtic super featherweight title with a first round stoppage of Liam Gaynor.

Cooney (10-0, 3 KO’s) is a strong southpaw and got straight on the front foot. A straight left hand put Gaynor over heavily within seconds of the opening bell. Gaynor (10-5) clambered to his feet but Cooney was in no mood to let him off the hook. He walked straight to Gaynor and rather than rushing the finish, he calmly picked his shots. A clean right hand froze Gaynor on the spot. He didn’t go down but referee, Paul McCullagh wisely stopped the fight after just 1.29 of the first.

Limerick’s Jamie Morrissey (5-1-1, 1 KO) put his BUI Celtic light heavyweight title on the line against Dublin’s 2020 Olympian, Emmet Brennan (2-0, 1 KO).

Tall and rangy, Morrissey got up on his toes and looked to keep the fight at range, popping out a jab and looking for his straight right hand. Morrissey’s head barely moved and presented an inviting target for Brennan who kept his calm and picked his moments to attack. He stiffened Morrissey’s legs slightly with a couple of leaping left hooks and also landed a solid right as the opening round wound down.

Although he was giving away height and reach, Brennan was able to find his range more regularly in the second. Morrissey had more control when he let his jab go but Brennan got on the front foot much more. He was able to out jab the taller man and began to put a right hand behind it. A clash of heads left Morrisey with a cut on his temple and apart from a nice right uppercut his output slowed as the round progressed.

Morrissey’s jab was reduced to little more than a range finder in the third and Brennan capitalized. His right hand couldn’t miss and he hurt Morrissey with a straight right-left hook combination. As soon as he realized he had his man in trouble, Brennan went for the finish. Morrissey made it to the end of the round but looked badly disorganized.

He regrouped in the fourth. By putting a little more weight into his shots, Brennan had to be a little more wary about countering. He was s till able to land those looping right hands when Morrissey got lazy with his jab but also had to pay a little more attention to that was coming back. Morrissey got on the front foot in the fifth, stinging Brennan with a right of his own and he began to have the local man looking marked up. It seemed like the tide was beginning to turn and Morrissey decided to give way his physical advantages and close the distance in an attempt to force Brennan onto the back foot.

Brennan looked to be tiring but a crunching overhand right connected cleanly with Morrissey’s jaw. The champion looked to have grown accustomed to the power but was again being hit with the cleaner shots. Brennan having success with short uppercuts and whereas Morrissey had success close earlier, Brennan now looked comfortable inside. Brennan had made it his kind of fight by the end of the seventh.

Brennan accelerated through the eight and final round. He hurt Morrissey with a two handed attack, snapping his head around with accurate shots. Morrissey’s mouthpiece came out but the respite while it was replaced was short. Brennan jumped straight back on him and didn’t stop punching until Morrissey’s corner threw in the towel.

Brennan is the new champion and the official time was 2.12 of the eighth round.
