MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – Chad Johnson got knocked down, but he didn’t get knocked out Sunday night.

Brian Maxwell floored Johnson in the final round of their four-weight cruiserweight exhibition, but he got up and made it to the final bell. Because their unofficial fight went the distance and wasn’t judged, a winner wasn’t declared.

The 43-year-old Johnson, a six-time Pro Bowl receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, boxed for the first time in the opener of Showtime Pay-Per-View’s Floyd Mayweather-Logan Paul undercard.

Maxwell dropped Johnson with a right hand that sent him to the canvas with just under a minute remaining in the fourth and final round. A stunned and exhausted Johnson got up and the southpaw recuperated well enough to avoid a knockout defeat.

Johnson drilled Maxwell with a straight left early in the third round, but he tired later in that round and seemed very tired in his corner between rounds.

Johnson and Maxwell exchanged left hands early in the second round. Johnson was more cautious in those two minutes than in the first round.

Maxwell pressured Johnson almost immediately, but Johnson wobbled him with a right hook less than 30 seconds into the opening round. Johnson backed Maxwell into the ropes later in the first round, but Maxwell caught him with a right hook that made Johnson back away.

Maxwell added another right hand with less than 20 seconds to go in the first round, but Johnson took that punch well.

The 33-year-old Maxwell, of Roanoke, Virginia, is 0-1 in professional boxing matches. Gaspard Pierre (2-0, 2 KOs, 1 NC) stopped Maxwell in the second round of the pro debut for both boxers February 20 in Miami.

Maxwell also 0-3 in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships matches and 2-3 in mixed martial arts fights.
