Mexican boxer Rigoberto “El Español” Alvarez has not yet finished his run with interim super welterweight title of the World Boxing Association (WBA) title. He won the belt on October 9 when he beat Japan's Nobuhiro Ishida in a very difficult fight that was organized in Nayarit, Mexico. However, Alvarez must soon defend his title to get himself pushed to world status. Alvarez is the older brother of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Cotto, the WBA's champion at 154, was elevated to "super champion" status, and the "regular belt" remains vacant.

"Negotiations are ongoing for my first defense. We are negotiating to fight in England. There is nothing certain, but I think good things are coming in my career," said Alvarez. "I am very excited to be a world champion. We have to get ready for that first defense."

Alvarez believes that Austin Trout of the United States could be the first challenger to his crown. But he does not rule out a showdown with Miguel Cotto, who won the title in his last fight with Yuri Foreman.

"I'll fight with whoever they put me in with. I'm ready, I am a fighter and am ready to fight anybody. Why not fight Cotto? I am 32-years-old and I want to face the best in the world," Alvarez said. "In my career I have not done badly. I have to get used to the idea of being a world champion and thus it is important to get a major fight."
