Thanks to his fiery red hair, Russian super featherweight Mark Urvanov has been nicknamed 'Canelo' for quite some time by his handlers and occasional fans.
For several years, the only thing in common between the Ural-based little-known prospect and the P4P #1 fighter in the world was their red hair color.
However, the situation has changed a bit over the last three years.
Through pain and going through the experience of loss, Urvanov, now 25, developed into quite a well-rounded fighter with recent kayo wins over 15-0 Akzhol Sulaymanbek Uulu and 21-1 former world title challenger Evhueny Chuprakov.
Interestingly both fighters are Urvanov teammates with RCC Boxing Promotions, a strong company led by well-known boxing impresario German Titov and his son Alexey.
Urvanov (18-2-1, 10 KOs) has a habit of fighting his teammates. Both of his losses – to Mikhail Alexeev and WBC/WBO #3 Mukhammadkhuja Yakubov – were in internal RCC collisions.
The win over Sulaymanbek Uulu brought Urvanov the WBA 130lb Gold title and positioned him for a shot at the full title. To further cement his position, Urvanov will now take on the 33-yer-old Venezuelan import Angel “Humilde” Rodriguez in a WBA eliminator.
Rodriguez (19-1, 10 KOs), a multi-time world amateur championship participant, has competed mostly in Mexico and Colombia, building a nice record but against limited opposition. His fight against Urvanov will be his first time outside the Americas as a pro.
Stellar American Gervonta Davis is still listed as the WBA 'super' champion in his weight class, while the 'regular' title belongs to Roger Gutierrez.
The chief supportive fight of the show, which will take place on June 26 at the RCC Boxing Academy in Ekaterinburg, Russia, will be a cross-roader between super featherweights Zhora Hamazaryan (10-3-2, 7 KOs) and Erzhan Turgumbekov (8-2-1, 2 KOs). It is set for eight. Undefeated lightweight prospect Zoravor Petrosyan (11-0, 4 KOs) will also be part of the card.
