In a recent interview, four division world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez explained that the mental part of a Mexican fighter is one of the most powerful weapons in the ring.

“The mentality that a Mexican fighter has is to never crack, to always give his best until the end. That is something that makes a big difference," Canelo, a native of Guadalajara, told ESPN Deportes.

On May 8th, Canelo will face WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders in a high stakes three belt unification from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Canelo is staying very busy after dominating Callum Smith last December and then coming right back to blow away Avni Yildirim in three rounds in February.

While some Mexican fight fans have criticized Canelo for his style of fighting, the very popular boxer explains that it's not all about 'going to war.'

Many fans refer to an aggressive come-forward fight strategy as "Mexican" style."

Canelo sees no reason to stand in front of his opponent and trade punches until one of them falls down.

He prefers to take his time, use movement, defense and pick the perfect moments to unload with calculated punches.

“For me, Mexican style is not about going in there to exchange, to give and take punches, to get knocked down and get back up; I don't think that's it. There are many styles in Mexican boxing and there have been many styles of Mexican boxing throughout the history of boxing. Gilberto Román is there, he moved very well, there are many fighters who have different styles ... I think Mexican boxing is also about knowing how to move, hit, and not get hit,” Canelo said.
