LAS VEGAS — Minutes after picking up his third middleweight belt in a unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was asked who he wanted to fight next, and the obvious name might not be his first choice.

Gennadiy Golovkin’s name came up during the in-ring interview with DAZN’s Chris Mannix. Alvarez didn’t sound too enthusiastic about a trilogy bout with Golovkin, saying he didn’t have unfinished business with Golovkin.

But the Mexican superstar left the door open.

“For me, it’s over,” Alvarez said about his rivalry with Golovkin. “But if the people want another fight, we’ll do it again, and I’ll beat him again.”

Golovkin sat ringside Saturday for Alvarez’s victory against Jacobs at T-Mobile Arena. Golovkin has faced both fighters and has a combined record of 1-1-1, with the lone loss coming versus Alvarez in September at the same venue.

It’s widely believed Golovkin signed with the streaming provider DAZN to chase the third bout with Alvarez. But Alvarez and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya said this week Golovkin needs to win a world title before the two foes step in the ring again.

Alvarez, the WBC/WBA/IBF champion, is only missing the WBO belt to become the undisputed champion at middleweight. That last belt belongs to Demetrius Andrade, who also sat ringside Saturday.

But a bout with Andrade wouldn’t sell as well as a third fight with Golovkin. Alvarez and Golovkin had a split draw in 2017 at T-Mobile Arena.

“I’m just looking for the biggest challenge,” Alvarez said. “That’s all I want. … That’s why I’m here. That’s what I was born for. To fight. To defend what’s mine. I’ll fight anyone.”

A rematch with Jacobs could be another option for Alvarez, who had trouble against Jacobs’ size.

“It was a great contest today, I look forward to the future,” Jacobs said. “I feel like I gave enough tonight to get the victory so I’ll have to go back to the tapes to see exactly what happened.”
