According to industry sources, former champion Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22KOs) - and not James Kirkland - is currently the frontrunner to face Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) on a televised date in December.

Canelo's team have confirmed that Clottey, who dominated Anthony Mundine in April, is one of the leading contenders.

Clottey's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, told BoxingScene.com that he's had discussions with Golden Boy Promotions regarding a fall fight with Canelo.

"We've had talks. I think it's a great fight and I hope it happens," DeGuardia told BoxingScene.com.

The big question, in the industry, is whether or not HBO will secure Canelo's next return. The Mexican star's last five fights were carried by Showtime, but multiple sources indicate that HBO is absolutely in the running for the December fight.
