Canelo Alvarez will try to defeat another unbeaten British super middleweight champion at a stadium in Texas.

BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the 12-round, 168-pound title unification bout between Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Promoter Eddie Hearn and Alvarez’s team chose the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys as the site for Alvarez-Saunders over Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

AT&T Stadium was the clear front-runner to host Alvarez-Saunders because Texas governor Greg Abbott lifted COVID-19-related capacity restrictions on all public places in that state earlier this month. The Cowboys’ stadium likely will be configured to hold between 60,000 and 70,000 fans for this event, though the entire venue is available for use that night.

The stadium could accommodate approximately 100,000 for boxing if necessary. Nevada officials would not have allowed nearly as many fans had Hearn brought Alvarez-Saunders to Allegiant Stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions that remain in place in that state.

Bringing Alvarez-Saunders to a stadium that will allow the most fans will significantly increase revenue from the event.

Tickets to the Alvarez-Saunders card will go on sale sometime next week. An official announcement of AT&T Stadium as the site for Alvarez-Saunders is expected at some point Friday.

The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger was the first to report the site for the Alvarez-Saunders fight in a Tweet sent out late Thursday night.

Mexico’s Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs) and England’s Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) will fight for Alvarez’s WBA and WBC 168-pound championships and Saunders’ WBO belt.

Alvarez, 30, will fight at AT&T Stadium for the second time. The four-division champion knocked out England’s Liam Smith in the ninth round of their junior middleweight championship match at AT&T Stadium in September 2016.

An announced crowd of 51,420 attended the Alvarez-Smith card at AT&T Stadium.

Four years later, Alvarez defeated Smith’s younger brother, Callum Smith, by unanimous decision in a 12-round super middleweight title fight at Alamodome in San Antonio. The crowd at Alamodome was restricted December 19 due to COVID-19 guidelines.
