Saul "Canelo" Álvarez will defend his WBC super welterweight championship on September 17th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, against Alfonso Gomez. The fight takes place in the most important time period for Mexico, and Canelo wants to win the fight in a very Mexican way.

’’I am ready, he is a tough fighter, he comes to fight, he has the experience and heart, but I will make my people proud by winning this fight in a Mexican style, with a Mexican punch," said the 21-year-old Alvarez. "I feel the adrenaline and there is some extra motivation to fight during the celebration of Mexican Independence. This is such a honor and I wont disappoint my fans.’’

That Mexican punch that Saul is talking about is the liver shot, which is a punch that was first introduced to the Mexican tradition by the legendary Kid Azteca and many great Mexican fighters have continued the legacy of that shot.

’’We have been working on the punch to the liver. We know Gomez is vulnerable to that spot and besides we want to continue with the [Mexican] tradition. Azteca was a great body puncher, and so was Julio Cesar Chavez, and there were many other great fighters from México. We have been practicing that punch in the gym every day," said Edison Reynoso, trainer of Canelo and CEO of Canelo Promotions.
