Caleb Plant is strictly in the big-fight business now. Sure he might still be willing to face a few opponents that aren’t exactly known, but for the most, the 31-year-old loves being involved in gigantic fights.

The crowd, what’s at stake, the sizable paychecks - they're all appealing to the former IBF super middleweight champ. In his last three ring appearances, Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) may have come up short on two of those occasions but he was proud to share the ring with Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Dirrell, and David Benavidez. His 2023 is likely over with but Plant already has his eyes set on his next opponent.

Jermall Charlo has been out of sight and out of mind. That’s what happens when you take a two-and-a-half-year sabbatical from the sport due to a bevy of issues. But while he was busy trying to get his life in order, both he and Plant just so happened to cross paths. It isn’t exactly clear what happened beforehand, but it resulted in Plant slapping Charlo across the face.

Since then, Plant has expressed an overwhelming desire to face the Houstonian in the ring. It’s been several months since Plant walked through those ropes. Ideally, the Nashville, Tennessee native would keep an active schedule. Still, when Stephen “Breadman” Edwards, Plant’s trainer, was asked about the possibility of facing Charlo immediately, he admitted that he didn’t see an issue with going down that route.

“I don’t think Caleb would have any problems going right to him,” Breadman told BoxingScene.com.

Considering what happened between them, it makes all the sense in the world for the duo to get it on sooner rather than later. But before fans begin drooling over their matchup, Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) has a few things to do first.

For starters, the 33-year-old needs to take care of business against Jose Benavidez Jr. on November 25th, in his comeback fight. Next, of course, Charlo needs to decide if he’ll move up in weight and campaign at 168 pounds moving forward.

The latter is salient, but the former is key in Breadman’s opinion. From his point of view, not only does Charlo need to win in order to warrant a showdown against his fighter, but he also needs to look incredibly sharp.

“He’s gotta win the fight first. Let’s see how Jermall looks. He can’t even really struggle real bad against Benavidez because he's an ex-40 pounder.”
