IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant was not surprised with the end result of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s recent victory over mandatory challenger Anvi Yildirim.

“I felt like Canelo was going to dominate and probably stop him but I didn’t know it would be so easy and soon. If you want to be a part of history, if you want to be in the history books forever, you can’t quit on your stool in the third round. You can’t not come out for the fourth round," Plant told James Lupton of Pro Boxing Fans

“Hats off to Canelo but at the end of the day I feel like Yildirim went out soft.”

It was announced post fight that Canelo will challenge for the WBO title taking on the champion, Billy Joe Saunders, May 8th. Plant gives Saunders “a good chance” of defeating Canelo when they meet.

“If he doesn’t get in there and give him too much respect and shell up and freeze up, like I feel Yildirim did and somewhat it’s what Callum [Smith] did as well, then he’s got a good chance. He’s got some attributes, I feel like he has more mental fortitude than the last two guys, he’s a little bit grittier," Plant said.

“When that bell rings we’re going to get to find out for sure, that’s what I love about boxing. This person and that person can say what they want but when the bell rings we are going to find out the truth.”

Plant has called for a bout with Canelo for a long time now and feels extremely confident that he has the beating of the Mexican pound-for-pound star.

“I can’t speak for anyone else but I feel like I have all the skills and all the tools. I feel like I have the mental fortitude, the toughness, the dog in me to go in there and do what I got to do to get my hand raised.

“Come September I am going to get my hand raised and become the first undisputed super middleweight of all time. If, and I say if, Canelo can get past Billy Joe Saunders and handles his business.”

Should Saunders do the almost unthinkable and inflict defeat on Alvarez the goal doesn’t change for Caleb, he still wants to become undisputed this year and is happy to face the southpaw from Hatfield.

“Absolutely, absolutely, that’s what I want, to become undisputed. I’ve been doing this sport for a long time and since I was a kid I wanted to become undisputed and I wanted to cement my name in the history books forever and leave my footprint in the sport in a way that nobody can erase. I feel like being undisputed and the first undisputed super middleweight is a great way of doing that. I’m chasing the belts, I want glory, I want legacy. So, that’s my goal.” Plant told

Many feel that the fight will not happen due to the cross promotion relationships however Caleb insists nothing will get in the way of the crowning of the first ever undisputed super middleweight champion this year.

“I’m not sure [if the cross promotion will be an issue] but if we want to become undisputed then we are going to have to link up and work out something, it’ll happen!”
