Miguel Cotto’s future path in boxing will likely lead him to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the fall. Should he win that fight, there could be a future showdown with Gennady Golovkin. Former champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico says Cotto showed that he is still the same fighter from several years ago, and with trainer Freddie Roach he will be competitive with anyone.

“They’re going to be good fights and hard fights for Miguel Cotto,” Calderon told BoxingScene.com. “The fight with Geale showed he still got it and he still can box. It showed that he has discipline and he didn’t get all crazy like he’s done in the past.”

With the Canelo fight Calderon feels it’s going to be a tough fight for his countryman but still likes his chances.

“It’s going to be a hard fight because Canelo is a good young strong 154,” Calderon said. “So it’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if he’s going to take it. I don’t want them to wait 5 year like Pacquiao and Mayweather but it’s going to be a hard fight for our fighter. But I like Cotto’s chances.”

In terms of a possible Cotto-Golovkin fight. He feels if Cotto can box, he can make things difficult for GGG.

“With Golovkin I always said Miguel’s not a middleweight. It’s still going to be a good fight. If Cotto boxes, I say he puts up a good challenge. If he goes toe to toe I say Golovkin knocks him out.”
