ARLINGTON, Texas – With all due respect to Errol Spence Jr. and Yordenis Ugas, Radzhab Butaev believes boxing fans should be looking forward to his welterweight title fight with Eimantas Stanionis more than the main event Saturday night.

Russia’s Butaev (14-0, 11 KOs, 1 NC) and Lithuania’s Stanionis (13-0, 9 KOs) will headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” doubleheader that’ll lead directly into a four-fight Showtime Pay-Per-View broadcast from AT&T Stadium. Butaev will make his first defense of the WBA world welterweight title he won when he stopped Jamal James in the ninth round of their October 30 bout at Mandalay Bay’s Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

“Well, honestly, if I was a fan, I would prefer our fight [over Spence-Ugas],” Butaev told BoxingScene.com through a translator. “It’s a very, very good fight, entertaining for the people. There promises to be drama.”

Butaev out-pointed Staninois in a pair of amateur bouts, but Stanionis’ second loss to Butaev occurred in 201*. They were ordered to fight after Butaev stopped Minneapolis’ James (27-2, 12 KOs) as part of the WBA’s welterweight tournament.

Stanionis, a 2016 Olympian, was supposed to square off against Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs) as part of that tournament. He stepped aside to allow Ugas, the WBA “super” champion, to box Spence (27-0, 21 KOs), the IBF and WBC champ, and then was ordered to battle Butaev.

“This is a serious fight,” Butaev said. “I know him. I know he’s a very good fighter. It’s gonna be a tough fight. We’re gonna bang out. As always with my fights and always with his fights, it’s gonna be a very entertaining fight.”

Butaev, 28, hopes that his opportunity to compete on such a high-profile card at the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys enables him to broaden his fan base in the United States.

“If either of us were more popular in the United States, all eyes would be on us,” Butaev said. “But unfortunately, we’re not famous yet. So, that’s what makes it more difficult. I’m not worried about being famous. But, of course, I want people to know me and to appreciate my boxing. I’m a fighter and I’m concentrating on my job, but I want more people to see me fighting and what I’m bringing to the ring.”

The odds on Butaev-Stanionis are exactly even (-110), according to Caesars Sportsbook. Before Butaev and Stanionis meet in this “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event, the telecast is set to start at 7 p.m. ET with a 10-round welterweight bout in which knockout artist Brandun Lee (24-0, 22 KOs), of La Quinta, California, will battle Brooklyn’s Zachary Ochoa (21-2, 7 KOs).
