Trainer Mike Stafford was in Lamont Peterson’s corner on Saturday night in the Barclays Center, when the scorecards were read in favor of Danny Garcia last night. Much like many people in the Peterson camp, he feels that Peterson won the fight running away.

“The fight wasn’t even close,” Stafford told BoxingScene.com “Lamont executed everything he needed to do, staying away from him using the jabs in the early rounds. Then in the later rounds he went for the kill and almost stopped him. The fight wasn’t even close.”

From the judge’s scorecard, the three officials did not favor Peterson’s movement in the ring and the 1st half of Peterson’s game plan may have cost him the fight because his push started in the second half of the fight. To that notion Stafford said, “It’s not that he took a while to start, it’s that he was sticking to the game plan. He was using the jab. People that are saying that don’t understand boxing. Danny was trying to hit Lamont and he wasn’t doing anything.”

Stafford feels the truth lies in the damage Peterson did to Garcia.

“The scorecards were bullsh*t,” Stafford said emphatically. “I thought maybe we get a split decision or anything for Lamont. We had the better shots.  Danny missed more shots than anything. He did not hurt Lamont Peterson, we hurt him more than he hurt us, just look at their faces.”

Stafford spoke briefly on his star fighter Adrien Broner’s return which is still slated for June 20th with an opponent to be determined.

“Broner will be back June 20th, we should know our opponent in a week or so. The fight will be at 141 or somewhere close to 140,” said the trainer.

Broner has made noise on social media about possibly fighting Danny Garcia and even Amir Khan. Regarding those two opponents, Stafford said, “We’ll let Lamont take care of Danny first, he deserves a rematch. Amir Khan, we want him too. If it come to that we’ll get him too. It’s just a matter of time.”
