Mikaela Mayer is officially set for her first career title fight.

The 2016 U.S. Olympian will face reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight titlist Ewa Brodnicka in the 4th quarter of 2020, after the two sides agreed to terms. A deal was reached in time to avoid a purse bid hearing which was scheduled to take place Friday via Zoom conference call, as moderated by the WBO from its headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Both sides declined comment to BoxingScene.com, regarding the specifics of their forthcoming bout.

The bout was ordered by the Puerto Rico-based sanctioning body on August 7, shortly after Matchroom Boxing announced its having signed Poland’s Brodnicka (19-0, 2KOs) to a promotional contract. The signing increased speculation of Matchroom’s intention to have Brodnicka face reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) 130-pound titlist Terri Harper (10-0-1, 5KOs), provided she successfully defended her title in an August 8 clash versus Natasha Jonas (9-1-1, 7KOs).

It proved moot on every level, as Harper and Jonas fought to a 10-round draw in a leading candidate for 2020’s Fight of the Year well worthy of a rematch.

Meanwhile, talks opened up for a mandatory title fight between Brodnicka and Mayer with hopes of avoiding a purse bid hearing. The WBO remained involved only to the point of enforcing its imposed deadline, which called for the bout to be made available to the highest bidder in the event they couldn’t strike a deal in time.

The scenario put Mayer (or at least her team) and Hearn figuratively in the same room, months after Mayer openly accused the promoter of buying Harper’s way to a shot at then-reigning WBC 130-pound titlist Eva Wahlstrom. Mayer was the number-one ranked contender at the time, though not a designated mandatory challenger which provided Matchroom with the leverage to make an offer that Wahlstrom simply couldn’t refuse.

Harper defeated Wahlstrom by unanimous decision to win the crown this past February in Sheffield, England.

Mayer had to wait out two canceled ring appearances before finally seeing her first fight of 2020. It proved to be well worth the wait for the 30-year old Los Angeles native, who now lives in Colorado Springs. Mayer scored a 10-round decision win over Nigeria’s Helen Joseph this past July in Las Vegas, in the first-ever female main event to air live on ESPN’s flagship network.

From there, Mayer found herself as the number one contender with the WBC and the WBO. The latter of the two acted on that ranking, calling for the mandatory title fight.

Brodnicka has made five successful defenses of the WBO junior lightweight title she claimed in 2017 following a 10-round shutout win over Irma Balijagic Adler. Her title reign along with the duration of her seven-pro career has taken place in Poland.

In her most recent outing, Brodnicka outpointed Djemilla Gontaruk over 10 rounds this past March in Dzierzoniow, Poland. The bout served as the last event to take place in Poland prior to the initial wave of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, having since resumed action behind closed doors this past June as has been the case in the United States.
