TOOWOOMBA'S Brayd Smith maintained his unbeaten professional record while his Smithy's Gym training partner Will Young claimed a special place in Darling Downs boxing history at Rumours International last night.

Smith took his career record to 10 wins when he overpowered Jarrett "Juarez" Owen for the WBC World Youth Silver Featherweight title.

Owen - who took the fight at short notice in place of visa-less Tanzanian Jay Jay Ngotiko - was knocked down twice in round two before his corner threw in the towel to end the bout.

Young became the third Downs boxer to claim the Australian featherweight championship when he defeated Emmanuel Micallef in a hectic battle to win the vacant title.

Young and Micallef turned on one of the night's most entertaining fights before Young was given the 10-round decision 99-90, 99-92, 100-89.

The Toowoomba electrician's win saw him join Gilbert Hooper and Merv Wockner - who was ringside for Young's victory - as Darling Downs national featherweight champions.

In other bouts, Toowoomba's Jack Asis made it 11 straight wins when he stunned Rivo Rengkung with a round-one knock-out 2:40secs into their Super Featherweight bout.

Darren Askew, from Smithy's Gym, also maintained his winning momentum when he stopped Eddy Comaro in the fourth round of their five-round light welterweight match.

Askew's fellow Englishman Josh Baillie continued his bright professional career start with unanimous points win over tough Warwick lightweight Kyle Teer.

Herman Ene-Purcell won the battle of the heavyweights with a points' victory over debutante Jamie Frost and Olaf Olsen outpointed Paul Edwards,

Tressa Lindenberg added to a good night for Smithy's Gym fighters with a points' win over Brittany Muscott in their three-round corporate bout.
