Jermell Charlo made a believer out of Derek “Bozy” Ennis. The father and trainer of Jaron Ennis, the highly ranked welterweight contender and IBF interim champion, was a gigantic supporter of the former undisputed junior middleweight title holder. But while he thought highly of him, Ennis knew that Charlo had his hands full.

This past weekend, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Charlo threw on 14 pounds of extra muscle and headed over to the super middleweight division to take on Canelo Alvarez.

Openly, Ennis had no issue with admitting that he was team Charlo. There was something about his demeanor, fighting style, and overall swag that Ennis simply loved. With that said, considering that Charlo was dominated for virtually every second of every round and fought timidly, Ennis was wholeheartedly disappointed.

“I wanted Charlo to win,” revealed Ennis to YSM Sports Media. “I thought he was going to do more than he was doing. It seemed like he was in there, to me, to survive and not get knocked out.”

From the moment the opening bell rang, Charlo was playing defense. Alvarez stalked him, landed bombs against the ropes, and never appeared worried about what was coming back in his direction.

Normally, Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) takes his surly attitude outside of the ring and makes his opponents pay. This time around, he had nothing for his man and fought like a fighter who simply knew he was overmatched.

Unlike when he came up short against Brian Castano and Tony Harrison, Charlo won’t be given the chance to make amends. So, with his wallet a bit inflated now, the 33-year-old will simply return to the junior middleweight division and look to regain his undisputed status.

Ultimately, Charlo wants to put his bad night against Alvarez behind him. As for Ennis, he still supports the Houston native but he’s sure Charlo wishes he could do that one over.

“I know Charlo could’ve did way better than that.”
