Heavyweight: Dillian Whyte avenged a loss to Alexander Povetkin to become the interim WBC titlist. Povetkin, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist who never quite got all the way to one of the primary sanctioning body belts, retired after a long run.
Cruiserweight: Lawrence Okolie joined the ranks of the belted with a stoppage of former titlist Krzysztof Glowacki in March. No one with a belt, including lineal kingpin Mairis Briedis, currently has a fight on the schedule. The WBA has elevated Ryad Merhy to their higher sub-title, above interim status.
Light Heavyweight: Artur Beterviev defended his lineal and unified crown for the first time. Joe Smith won the vacant WBO belt with a narrow decision over Maxim Vlasov. Both are with Top Rank. Is further unification possible at 175 lbs? Jean Pascal remains a WBA sub-titlist following a failed test for several banned substances.
Super Middleweight: Saul Alvarez now has three of the four major belts in the division after thrashing Billy Joe Saunders. Will he add the fourth belt against Caleb Plant later this year? David Morrell has been promoted by the WBA from interim to regular titlist behind Alvarez as the one that matters.
Middleweight: Erislandy Lara picked up a WBA sub-title in the division. Jermall Charlo, who defended successfully again, and Lara would be an intriguing match for both. Lara also retains, for now, the same sub-designation from the WBA at Jr. middleweight.
Jr. Welterweight: A new lineage was established at Jr. welterweight when Josh Taylor defeated Jose Ramirez in a battle between the consensus top two in the division. It is the first lineal lineal king at 140 science Terence Crawford left for welterweight. Taylor is the fifth man since the birth of the WBO to win all four major sanctioning body belts.
Lightweight: The WBC ratings now list franchise titlists above their world champions, rendering them the equivalent of WBA super titles somewhat officially. Franchise champions, in this division’s case Teofimo Lopez, will be treated accordingly going forward as the primary WBC belt.
Jr. Lightweight: The IBF belt was left vacant when Joseph Diaz failed to make weight for a defense against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov. The bout ended in a draw and the title remained vacant.
Featherweight: Eduardo Ramirez won a WBA interim belt in May with a knockout Isaac Avelar. The primary WBA titlist is Leo Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz has gone so long without fighting in the division one can wonder if the WBA has forgotten he’s there.
Jr. Featherweight: Brandon Figueroa won his first major title with a knockout of undefeated WBC titlist Luis Nery. Figueroa also remains a WBA sub-titlist and will next unify with WBO titlist Stephen Fulton in an outstanding showdown of young talents.
Bantamweight: A surprising turn of events could result in a new lineal champion being crowned without lifting an additional finger. Nonito Donaire reminded all of how dangerous he remains at bantamweight, capturing a belt in May versus Nordine Oubaali. Now Donaire will unify that WBC strap with WBO titlist John Riel Casimero in August, stepping into a slot initially contracted to Guillermo Rigondeaux. If Donaire wins, he’ll hold two belts as will Inoue. Inoue won his second belt by defeating Donaire already. A rematch would be all the buzz but the real world champion at bantamweight would already be resolved.
Jr. Bantamweight: Juan Francisco Estrada unified the WBC and WBA belts in what remains the leader for Fight of the Year versus Roman Gonzalez, even if many disagreed with the decision. These two are headed toward a rubber match and the WBC belt has elevated Estrada to franchise status so former champion and mandatory Srisaket Sor Rungvisai can fight for a separate belt in the meantime.
Flyweight: Sunny Edwards boxed beautifully to hand Moruti Mthalane his first loss in more than a decade. For Mthalane, it’s a tough end to a run interrupted by all sorts of outside the ring issues that kept him out of one of the most interesting flyweight fields in years during the last decade.
Jr. Flyweight: Esteban Bermudez pulled off one of the more surprising upsets of the year, knocking out undefeated Carlos Canizales for a WBA sub-title at 108 lbs.
