Miguel Berchelt will look to defend his WBC junior lightweight title for the sixth time Saturday against Jason Sosa, but if you ask the Mexican fighter, he’s more interested in facing the best fighters more than unifying championships in the 130-pound division.

“I respect Sosa very much, and I must beat him first, but after I do, I would like to fight Oscar Valdez and move to 135 and fight Vasyl Lomachenko,” Berchelt told BoxingScene.com. “I’m not interested in [WBO 130-pound champion Jamel] Herring’s belt, but if there is a good offer, I will consider it. I have the belt everyone wants. I’m an explosive fighter who is clever in the ring and loves to win by knockout. That’s what the fans like.”

The 27-year-old super featherweight will have to wait to see how Valdez performs in his 130-pound debut on Nov. 30 against Andres Gutierrez before banking on any big plans in 2020. A fight with the technical Lomachenko would be more intriguing, simply to see how the Ukrainian pound-for-pound great can withstand Berchelt’s power. A match with Hearing would be easy to make because, like Valdez and Lomachenko, Berchelt is a Top Rank promoted fighter

Berchelt (36-1, 32 KOs) has bricks in both hands and stopped Francisco Vargas twice, the first in 2017 for the title he currently owns, and the second in a rematch last year.

He’ll put his hands to the test Saturday against Sosa (23-3-4, 16 KOs) at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson (ESPN), who is riding a three-fight winning streak.

“This is going to be a great fight,” said Berchelt. “Sosa is an excellent fighter. He has a lot of hunger to become a world champion again. It will not be easy. It will be a war, and a classic Puerto Rico versus Mexico fight.”
