The father and trainer of super middleweight contender David Benavidez is more convinced than ever that his son will not only defeat Canelo Alvarez in a potential fight but stop the Mexican superstar inside the distance.

Jose Benavidez Sr. was not exactly wowed by Alvarez’s points win over Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The 32-year-old Alvarez largely dominated the 40-year-old Golovkin for most of their super middleweight undisputed bout to win a unanimous decision, but his efforts were not exactly reflected in the scorecards. All three judges saw a far more competitive fight than most other observers, turning in tallies of 115-113, twice, and 116-112.

“I guarantee you with this kind of performance David will stop him in seven rounds,” Benavidez Sr., who attended the Alvarez-Golovkin card, told FightHype.com.

Benavidez Sr. has not been shy about criticizing Alvarez over the past couple of years, as he is convinced that Alvarez is afraid to face his son in the ring. While Benavidez Sr. believes that Alvarez thoroughly defeated Golovkin, he also apparently thinks it is proof that his son will have his way with the box office star.

“He won, he won,” Benavidez Sr. said of Alvarez. “To be honest, ‘Triple G’ did a great job. To be honest I thought he (Golovkin) was going to get stopped maybe in about six, seven rounds. Unbelievable. He went all rounds and he did catch Canelo with some combinations, uppercuts and hooks also. He had a mark, you know. For being [40] years old he did unbelievable.

“But I think like I said ‘the Mexican Monster’ (David Benavidez) will stop him (Alvarez) in six, seven rounds.”

In the postfight press conference, Alvarez was asked about fighting Benavidez, to which he responded that the 25-year-old Mexican-American has done "nothing' to deserve a fight.

Benavidez Sr. pointed out that he believes Alvarez has peaked as a fighter and that that is the reason why he wants nothing to do with his son.

“That’s the reason why he doesn’t want to fight David,” Benavidez Sr. said. “Fighting David at 168, [David is] bigger, younger, 25 years old, hungry — that’s the reason he doesn’t want to fight David Benavidez.

“We’ve seen the peak (of Alvarez),” Benavidez Sr. said. “Like I said , no disrespect, this guy’s been super disciplined, been working real hard. It would be really hard for someone to get to where he’s got to.

“But within time everything has an end. I think this is his end. That’s why he doesn’t want to fight David Benavidez.”
