Welterweight Craig Callaghan (16-1, 7 KOs) takes on Josue Garcia (7-4, 4 KOs) in the main event of the latest Savarese Promotions Boxing fight night tonight at the Ballroom at Bayou Place in Downtown Houston. Callaghan, 29, of Liverpool, England, had previously outpointed Garcia last year.

Callaghan has been stuck in a rut fighting a the same caliber of sub-par opponents since he began his pro career in 2012. He was poised to up his level of competition and fight fellow prospects at several points of his career but the fights never materialized.

"I've been ready for a while to fight these guys to get to the next level, guys that will bring the best out of me," Callaghan told The Houston Chronicle. "I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing and winning and looking good at the same time."

Also fighting on the card is welterweight Arturo Marquez (6-0, 3 KOs), the son of 1992 US Olympian and former junior middleweight world titleholder Raul Marquez. After a 65-10 amateur career, Marquez, 20, made his pro debut last year. He was signed by Top Rank almost immediately and has averaged a fight every two months since.

“I’ve sat down more on my punches to put more power behind them in the pros and my defense has gotten better,” Marquez said.

“I’ve always had more a pro style. Even in the amateurs people would always tell me that I would do much better in the pros. In every fight, I learn something new. That’ll help when it’s time to go to the next level.”
