Alexis Angulo made weight Saturday morning to move forward with his 10-round fight against Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night.

Colombia’s Angulo weighed 176.2 pounds during a second-day weigh-in that was scheduled after he came in overweight Friday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York. Angulo’s maximum allowance for the second-day weigh-in was 178 pounds, 10 pounds above the original contracted weight of 168.

The 38-year-old Angulo stepped on the New York State Athletic Commission’s scale a 169.6 pounds Friday. He was granted two hours to come back to the NYSAC’s scale at 168 pounds or lower, but Angulo refused to weigh-in a second time.

Angulo’s antics caused a prolonged negotiation that lasted into Friday night, until handlers for both boxers finally agreed on Angulo’s undisclosed financial penalty and the weight limit for Saturday morning.

Brooklyn’s Berlanga made weight on his first try. The 25-year-old super middleweight officially weighed 167.6 pounds.

The bout between Berlanga (19-0, 16 KOs) and Angulo (27-2, 23 KOs) is the main event of a doubleheader ESPN will televise from Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. The telecast is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. ET with an eight-round junior lightweight bout in which Henry Lebron (15-0, 10 KOs), of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, will square off against San Juan’s Luis Lebron (18-3-1, 11 KOs).

The first seven Berlanga-Angulo undercard bouts will be streamed by ESPN+, starting at 7 p.m. ET.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Berlanga as almost a 3-1 favorite versus Angulo.

Berlanga has gone the distance in three straight fights after starting his career with 16 consecutive first-round knockouts. Angulo has been stopped inside the distance only by former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez.

Phoenix’s Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) defeated Angulo by technical knockout after 10 one-sided rounds in August 2020 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Angulo’s first loss was a 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs), who was the WBO super middleweight champion when he outpointed Angulo in June 2018 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.
