Middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo has lashed out at his countryman, Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs).

Angulo faced Canelo in March 2014 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo dominated the contest and stopped Angulo in the tenth round.

According to Angulo, Mexicans were made to look bad by Canelo's conduct with WBC/WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).

After his brutal knockout of Amir Khan in May, Canelo asked Golovkin - who was sitting at ringside - to get in the ring and then accepted his challenge for a showdown in the fall. At the post-fight press conference, Canelo boasted of possessing a 'big set of balls' and promised to meet Golovkin in the ring.

But the fight never happened. Canelo vacated his WBC middleweight title and the sanctioning body made Golovkin their new beltholder. Canelo then announced his return to the junior middleweight division to challenge WBO champion Liam Smith on September 17th.

The promoters behind Canelo and Golovkin have a verbal agreement to match their fighters in September 2017.

Angulo doubts the fight will ever happen and he believes Canelo's actions in May were simply for show.

"I honestly think it was a publicity stunt with [Canelo] calling him out and making people think that he was going to fight him. If he was such a great Mexican fighter like they say he is, why not actually fight the best guy in his division which is Triple G? Why shine him off and not actually fight him. Mexicans don't do do that," Angulo told BoxingScene.com.

"Mexicans have balls and go [fight]. I think that it was pure bullsh*t. I think if he had such big balls then he wouldn't have given up his belt."
