Angel Acosta aims to remain on track to join his wife in the championship circle.

The former WBO junior flyweight titlist is set to face unbeaten Venezuelan flyweight Angelino Cordova. Both boxers were 111.6 pounds for their scheduled ten-round flyweight, which serves as the main event of a Golden Boy Fight Night on DAZN show Thursday evening from Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Puerto Rico’s Acosta is married to current IBF women’s flyweight titlist Arely Mucino (32-3-2, 11KOs), who won her title last October. It came a year after Acosta suffered a fourth-round stoppage to unbeaten WBO flyweight title claimant Junto Nakatani in Tucson, Arizona September 2021. The setback marked a failed bid to become a two-division titlist, as Acosta previously held the WBO junior flyweight title.

His lone appearance of 2022 came in this very venue, which saw Acosta score a first-round knockout of Janiel Rivera last May 12. The win ran his record to 3-1 at flyweight since the end of his junior flyweight title reign, which also took place at this site in a highly questionable 12th round stoppage to Elwin Soto. Acosta was ahead on all three scorecards but was previously dropped in round three and briefly stunned early in round twelve which triggered a stoppage call from referee Thomas Taylor and an immediate protest from Acosta and his corner.

Cordova (17-0-1, 12KOs) fights stateside for the second straight time after a career entirely spent in his native Venezuela. His U.S. debut produced by far the biggest win to date for the 27-year-old prospect, who outpointed former title challenger Alex Aragon Vega last June 25 in Kissimmee, Florida.

The winner will be poised to challenge for the WBO flyweight title.
