BoxingScene.com has been advised that former super featherweight champion Andrew Cancio (21-5-2) will take on Saul “Neno” Rodriguez (24-1-1) on September 12th in an ESPN televised bout set for 10 rounds. The fight will have a maximum weight limit of 131 pounds. ESPN.com was first to report the fight.

The card will take place at “The Bubble” inside of the MGM Grand Garden Hotel and Casino like the rest of the Top Rank/ESPN cards since boxing returned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cancio scored a major upset when he stopped Alberto Machado in 4 rounds in February, 2019 to capture the WBA super featherweight title. He followed up that performance by knocking him out a round faster in their June rematch. His rollercoaster 2019 campaign ended in November when Rene Alvarado stopped him on cuts in 7 rounds.

Cancio will now be trained by veteran trainers Marcos Caballero and Joel Díaz in the Coachella Valley in Southern California.

Rodriguez bounced back from last year’s shock knockout loss to Miguel Angel Garcia with a 4th round KO victory over John Ross in February.

In other action on the card, former title challengers Miguel Marriaga and Joet Gonzalez will square off in a previously announced featherweight showdown.

Welterweight contender Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Amir Imam were also mentioned as a possibility for the card for but terms for the bout were never agreed upon.
