Amanda Serrano can now look forward to a brighter future.

The record setting seven-division and reigning featherweight titlist made quick work of familiar foe Dahiana Santana, scoring a 1st round knockout win Wednesday evening at Hotel Catalonia Malecon Center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Serrano floored Santana one minute into the contest, with a subsequent flurry prompting the stoppage at 1:29 of round one.

The unlikely rematch came about after Serrano saw at least three opponents fall through over the course of the past month. The Brooklyn-based Boricua southpaw was originally due to appear on the undercard of Thursday’s Ring City USA show from Wild Card Boxing Gym in Hollywood, California. Those plans were scrapped when her original foe pulled a back muscle and two more tested positive for COVID-19.

It led to her promoter, Lou DiBella calling in a favor to D.R.’s leading promoter Belgica Peña of Shuan Boxing to get Serrano on Wednesday’s show. The need to secure a local opponent resulted in a rematch with Santana (36-13, 15KOs), whom Serrano stopped in the 8th round of their April 2017 junior featherweight title fight.

Part two took place at a catchweight, with Serrano coming in at a firmly-toned 133 pounds and Santana weighing 137 pounds. Once the bell sounded, it was all Serrano who immediately went on the attack in forcing the 36-year old Santana out of her envelope.

A series of body shots had Santana in trouble, with Serrano scoring the bout’s lone knockdown courtesy of a sweeping right hook. Santana beat the count but was battered immediately thereafter, prompting referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. to stop the contest.

Serrano picks up her second win of a frustrating 2020 campaign slowed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic along with failed plans for a superfight with fellow pound-for-pound entrant and reigning World lightweight champion Katie Taylor. Such a fight could still be in play down the road, though for now Serrano (39-1-1, 29KOs) will set her sights on a weight more befitting her frame.

“I want to become undisputed featherweight champion in 2021,” insisted Serrano, who has won titles in every division from junior bantamweight through junior welterweight.

Next on the hit list for the Puerto Rican queen is fellow featherweight titlist Jelena Mrdjenovich, who fights on the aforementioned Ring City USA show Thursday evening.

Serrano’s repeat win over Santana came on the undercard of Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Mendez’s strawweight title defense versus Alexis Diaz. The show streamed live on Shuan Boxing’s YouTube channel.
