Former World Boxing Association (WBA) "regular" champion Alexander Besputin is potentially going to return to action on September 25 in Yekaterinburg, according to statements made by the Secretary General of the Russian Boxing Federation, Umar Kremlev, to TASS.

"Alexander Besputin, to whom a corresponding proposal has already been made, may return on the same card with Artur Beterbiev. For Besputin, this fight will be the first for him on Russian soil," said Kremlev.

Earlier this year, the World Boxing Association (WBA) stripped Besputin of the "regular" welterweight title. The Russian boxer failed a doping test in the aftermath of title win over countryman Rajab Butaev in December of last year in Monte Carlo.

At one point Besputin (14-0, 9 KOs) was ordered to make a mandatory defense against Yordenis Ugas, who will now face Abel Ramos for the vacant belt.

Besputin has already made it clear that he does not intend to pursue a rematch with Butaev and strongly denies that he intentionally ingested any performance enhancing drugs.

The main event of the evening on September 25 will be a mandatory fight between WBC, IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev and challenger Meng Fanlong of China. For, Beterbiev this will also be his first fight as a professional on Russian soil.

Kremlev maintains that the planned event is not going to be postponed, with everything currently proceeding as scheduled with the preparations.

The event is going to be streamed in the United States by either ESPN or ESPN+.

Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs) and Fanlong (16-0, 10 KOs) were scheduled to headline an ESPN televised show on March 28 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada, but it was canceled due to the coronavirus.
