Alex Winwood clearly enjoys the fast track.

The first-year pro passed with flying colors in an ambitious leap in class, as he made quick work of Indonesia’s Tibo Monabesa. Winwood scored three knockdowns to force a fourth-round stoppage of the 25-fight pro, which came in just his second pro bout Friday at Metro City in Northbridge, Australia.

Winwood floored the visiting Monebesa (21-2-2, 8KOs) late in round three and twice more in round four to earn the win. The fight came just three months after his pro debut, already scheduled for ten round bouts and with a far loftier goal in mind for his immediate future.

“I want to fight for the world title, and become the fastest Australian to do so,” insisted Winwood, a 25-year-old junior flyweight who represented Australia in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I want to break Jeff Fenech's record as Australia's fastest world champion."

Fenech won his first major title in just his seventh pro contest, when he stopped Satoshi Shingaki in the ninth round of their April 1985 IBF bantamweight title. It was the first of three divisional crowns won by Fenech, a boxing treasure in Australia and who was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002.

Winwood has five more fights to match or trump that achievement. The former amateur standout from Mandurah, Western Australia made a splash in his pro debut with a second-round knockout of Mario Bunda last November 25 also in Northbridge. Friday’s win further proved his potential for stardom, and in a junior flyweight division where a race to the top isn’t out of the question for a fighter of his caliber.

It was what caught the eye of manager Tony Tolj, best known for his work with the Moloney twins—Jason and Andrew, who are on the verge of separate title shots while also mentoring Winwood.

“Alex Winwood was pure dynamite and a world of maturity taking on former IBO World Champion in 2nd professional fight and destroying him inside four rounds,” Tolj told BoxingScene.com. “He is a special talent. Along with Andrew and Jason Moloney, the three amigos are looking in devastate form.

"The A Rock" Alex Winwood put out statement, he's coming.”
